John Back, the New York metropolitan area's star foosball (tabletop soccer) player, is taking on all comers at the free “Replay Foosball Challenge" starting Independence Day weekend.The competition, sponsored by Replay jeans and casual wear to mark its summer sales season, will take place at the Replay flagship store, 109 Prince Street (at Greene St) in the SoHo section of Manhattan.The tournament begins Friday, July 1, between 2 p.m.-7 p.m. It continues Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3 (noon-5 p.m., both days), and again the following weekend, Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10 (noon-5 p.m., both days).Carey Migliaccio, Replay spokesperson, said there is no fee, and anyone can sign up at the store to play Back or attend as a spectator.
"Apart from breaks, John plans to play the entire five-hour schedule each of the five days," said Migliaccio. "He is used to playing for long periods, sometimes for 12 hours at a time."Back ranks at the top of the area's foosball players and is unbeaten, as he puts it, for "a few years." Earlier this month, he was victorious at one of the top foosball challenges in the Northeast, the DYP (Draw Your Partner) competition in Boston.Foosball, popular in Europe, has become a staple of the downtown Manhattan scene, attracting both male and female players.The tourney will be played on a mahogany, top-of-the-line Tornado foosball table.
